Description |
Rachel's Oma (her grandmother) has two picture albums.
In one the photographs show only happy times -- from after
World War II, when she and her daughters had come to America.
But the other album includes much sadder times from before
-- when their life in Germany was destroyed by the Nazis'
rise to power.
For as
long as Rachel can remember, Oma has closed the other
album when she's gotten to the sad part. But today Oma
will share it all. Today Rachel will hear about what her
grandmother, her mother, and her aunts endured. And she'll
see how the power of this Jewish family's love for one
another gave them the strength to survive.

When all the soup and chicken and challah have
been eaten and all the plates and glasses have
been cleared, Oma always lets me take out her
two photo albums. One is old and worn, the pages
brittle.
"This
album is about my first life before I came to
America," says Oma.
The
other is new and clean, and inside there are
even a few pictures of me.
"This
album is about my second life here," she
says. "Why am I so lucky to have two lives?
That is a long and interesting story."
"Tell
it to me, please?" I always beg as I open
the first album.
"Of
course," says Oma, and she begins.

"Moving yet unsentimaental, this book presents tragedy
in the context of family love and hope, thus offering readers
a safe context for learning a difficult chapter of history."

Starred review, Publishers Weekly
"The
book introduces the Holocaust in a simple but factual narrative
that can be easily understood by youngsters who have no
knowledge of World War II...This offering answers the need
for appropriate Holocaust literature for young children
and should be considered a first purchase."

Behind the Story

I was the first person in my family to be born in the United States.
My mother and her sisters and my grandmother were four Jewish women
who managed to survive the Holocaust. I always thought they were
very lucky and very brave.
A few years ago I decided to start painting pictures based on my
mother’s old family photos taken in Germany during the time
before World War II. After a while I thought the paintings needed
the incredible true family story to go with them. This was the first
time I ever made illustrations for a book before writing the words.
ALWAYS REMEMBER ME is quite different from my other picture books
as you will see when you read it.
